Over the summer months, NHL players that live in Winnipeg or rural Manitoba have been gathering at a local rink in Winnipeg to remain in game shape and work on their skills. This week I decided to take a trip down to the rink to get some in-person autographs from some of the players at the fitness camp. This morning I was able to get Tobias Enstrom to sign a 2012-13 Score card and a Winnipeg Jets puck. Enstrom is considered to be one of the tougher signers in the NHL, but this morning he was in a great mood and happy to be back on the ice. Travis Hamonic also signed 3 cards. Winnipeg Jets rookie, Ivan Telegin was also in attendance and signed a few photos for me. Some of the others in attendance that I was able to get were Ryan Reaves, Quinton Howden, Jannik Hansen, Calvin Pickard, Chet Pickard, and J.P. Vigier. All the guys were super cool! I hope the NHL and NHLPA can get a deal done soon and avoid another lockout!

I returned home from my vacation a couple nights ago. What an awesome time I had. The United States is a beautiful country! I travelled throughout the mountains of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming while visiting many historical sites. My trip consisted of boating, rafting, fishing, swimming and all that good stuff that people do when they camp. I also participated in many cultural ceremonies and actually lived in a teepee for a week! As many of you may already know, I am a proud Aboriginal Canadian (Native/Indian). It was great to once again visit many places with such historical meaning to my culture and significance to all of North America.
While I was away, my good Mike got 5 different in-person autographed photos for me. The first was legendary racer Mario Andretti who was in Winnipeg for a free meet and greet at a local Car & Tire shop. Mike told me that Mario was very nice! The second was former Winnipeg Jets player Perry Miller. Perry grew up in Winnipeg in the same neighborhood as me (Weston). I was pumped when I saw the inscription! This is going up on the wall!
Mike also got me an autographed photo of former Atlanta Braves relief pitcher and current pitching coach of the St. Paul Saints, Kerry Lightenberg.
Last but not least, Mike was able to get me Canadian Rock N Roll legend Kim Mitchell as well as Junior Wimbledon Champion Felipe Peliwo! Huge thank you to the Wynne Dog for getting me all of these while I was gone. I defintely have some good friends here in Winnipeg! My friend John was also able to get me an autographed Steve Nash 8x10 Los Angeles Lakers photo this past weekend at a function in Toronto! That's another one that's going up on the wall! I also have to thank my friend's over at CWE as they got me a few Brian Christopher autographed photos while I was away.
Moral of this story is to make sure you make friends in this hobby! I am steady getting autographs for friends all over North America and here in Winnipeg. If you have the means to do it, there's definitely no need to be greedy. As you can see, it all comes back in time! It's great to be back!

Detroit Pistons Point Guard Brandon Knight was in Winnipeg this morning to promote the upcoming NBA Exhibition game between the Pistons and the T-Wolves. After Brandon Knight's short interview with the media, he sat down and signed autographs for about 60 people who lined up to meet him. Brandon signed two 11x14 photos for me. The Detroit Pistons take on the Minnesota T-Wolves on October 24th. I am looking forward to attending my first NBA game and also trying to graph the teams as well. I have heard horror stories of NBA players walking past fans and autograph collectors without any acknowledgement at all. It should be interesting to see how the game and the autograph experience will be on October 24th.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! I know I sure am! The summer is always an awesome time for me. My son is home everyday from school and so am I. When I'm not at the beach or hanging out with my family I am often out geting IP autographs or sending photos to get signed TTM. Over the past couple of weeks I have found a new way to expand my collection at a minimal cost and that is by checking out local thrift stores. I was inspired about a month ago after listening to the Autograph Weekly Podcast. I heard of a collector that found a Mickey Mantle signed book at a thrift store. I believe he only paid $1.99 for it. I knew that there would be a slim chance that I would find a Mantle signed book. There is almost no chance I would find anything signed by the Hall of Fame legend as I live in Canada and I don't believe Mickey Mantle ever ventured up to Manitoba in his travels. I started thinking about some of the great Canadian athletes that had book signings in Winnipeg over the past 20 years or so. Names such as Ken Dryden, Gordie Howe, and Bret Hart came to mind.
I decided to go to a thrift store here in Winnipeg called Value Village. I spent about 5 minutes looking through the sports autobiography section when I came across the book "Manon: Alone in front of the net". I couldn't believe it, on my first attempt looking for autographs at the thrift store I found an autographed copy signed by the first female to play in a National Hockey League game, Manon Rheaume.  I didn't even have to flip to the first page to find the autograph. Manon signed the front of the book in bold Gold paint pen. The book cost me $1.99!

A couple days later I decided to try out the local Goodwill thrift store which is a 2 minute walk from the front door of my home. I rummaged through a few books and found an autographed copy of Man in Motion signed by Canadian Paralympic athlete Rick Hansen and sportswriter Jim Taylor! Another great find and it only cost me .99 cents!

Yesterday, I visited another Value Village thrift store and found a LP album signed by The Romantics. The album is personalized to Debbie and is signed by the full band. The album cost me $1.99. So far I am 3/3 when checking out thrift stores for autographed items. Collectors in larger cities should have an easier time finding hidden autograph treasures.

I am interested in hearing your stories on autographed thrift store, yard sale and flea market finds. You can reach me on Twitter @FirstRow_ca. Reminder to all my fellow collectors that you can also trade and buy autographed items at my online store . Reminder to also subscribe to The Autograph Network for all the latest TTM successes from me and hundreds of other autograph collectors. Also, sign up to trade, buy, sell and show off your collection at Rackrs.Com. Hope everyone has a great summer! Be sure to check back everyday! Thank you again for your support!

Earlier this evening I went down to McPhillips Casino to meet legendary Canadian rock band Streetheart. Streetheart is huge here in Winnipeg. They are probably the second biggest band to come from Winnipeg (second to the Guess Who). The guys from Streetheart are all very nice and thanked everyone for staying after the show to meet them. I was able to get albums signed for myself and for my mom who is a big Streetheart fan. The guys were impressed with my albums and told me that they loved signing old LP's. If you haven't heard of Streetheart, I highly recommend looking up their music on Youtube or iTunes if you enjoy classic rock. Big thanks to Streetheart and McPhillips Casino for putting on a great show and an awesome meet and greet!
