Autograph Collector Profile - THESTOUT79

Every week we will profile an autograph collector who is well-known around the Autograph Collecting Community. To start the Autograph Collector Profile series, we are proud to present Stout 79.

Q. How long have you been collecting autographs?
A. I've been collecting for 16 years off and on.

Q. What genres of autographs do you collect?
A. I usually start off doing baseball at the start of Spring Training. During the wait time, I usually send out WWE. NHL Hockey is one of my favorite sports to TTM. The players usually sign multiple items and then sometimes send back free pucks.

Q. Who was your first autograph?
A. My first autograph must have been Keith Primeau. I got him during a meet and greet. It all started from there. My first TTM Autograph would be Dan Marino.

Q. Do you collect exclusively TTM or do you autograph in-person as well?
A. Mostly TTM. It depends on the price and location for in-person autographs. Most place price gouge due to popularity.

Q. How many TTM’s do you send out per week?

A. Usually 20-50 requests per week.

Q. How do you find information on addresses, signing habits, etc.?
A. I use StarTiger or

Q. Do you handwrite or type your letters?
A. Always handwritten. Typing seems like you don't care, and most likely, your items won't get signed.

Q. Have you received any letters back from the person you sent the autograph request to? Have they included anything extra?
A. Yes, some football game used gloves and baseball game used gloves. Letters mostly.

Q. Over at your YouTube Channel STOUT79 you have frequent autograph giveaways. Besides YouTube, how can other collectors reach you?
A. Twitter: @thestout79, Instagram: TheStout79
Q. What’s the best autographed item in your collection?
A. The best item is probably my multi team signed hockey jerseys - Nashville Predators & New York Islanders.
Q. Do you have any tips for anyone looking to get into the autograph hobby?
A. Just have patience and collect what you want to collect.

Rest In Peace - Dave Henderson

Sad news today, as former Major League Baseball player Dave Henderson has passed away of an apparent heart attack. Dave was a great signer and even better baseball player. Henderson played 14 seasons in the Majors playing for: Seattle, Boston, Oakland, San Francisco, and Kansas City. He is best known for his series changing 9th inning homerun in Game 5 of the 1986 ACLS.

Dave was one of the best through the mail signers during and after his playing days. He accommodated all of his fans. He will be missed. Dave Henderson was 57 years old.

How to Meet Stars, Celebrities and Athletes: Getting Autographs In-Person

Meeting your favorite singer, actor, actress, or athlete can be one of the greatest memories in your life if all goes well. Do you want to meet the big star coming to your city? Here are some essential rules and tips for meeting your favorite star in-person.
1. Do Your Homework
The Internet is a powerful tool. If you do your research, you should have no problems finding information on flights, hotels, signing habits, public signings, appearances, schedules, etc.
Example: If you are looking to meet a certain rock star for a chance at an autograph or picture and let’s say this certain rock star had a show yesterday in Vancouver, BC and you’re located in Fargo, North Dakota, you would need to search flights originating from the Vancouver area. A lot of musical acts will have at least one day of travel as most travel by tour bus. If this should happen you will need to be on the lookout for tour buses.
What hotels do sports teams, politicians, movie stars, musicians stay at? This is something you can find out by joining Startiger: The Autograph Community or by a little bit of luck Google.
2. Be Patient
On most occasions, you can expect to wait hours on end for the opportunity to meet the celeb. Patience is key! If you don’t have patience or if you are of the opinion that time is money, the better option for you may be buying the autograph. There is a handful of reputable Autograph Dealers who would gladly help you out.
3. Manners – Etiquette
Remember, stars and athletes are people too. They have good days and bad days just like everyone else. It is not your right as a fan that they have to stop and sign an autograph or take a picture with you. If they choose to oblige your autograph request, be courteous! This means using your manners. “Please, Thank-you, Mr., Mrs.”
Stay calm! Stars and celebs can sense your anxiety. Call it a sixth sense that all athletes and stars have. If you are freaking out and being pushy, 9 out of 10 times they won’t stop to sign for you. 9 out of 10 times if this happens, you will have other fans and collectors ready to make sure that this never happens again. There are a lot of “regulars” out there who will make your collecting experience a horrible one if you ruin their chance of an autograph.
4. Be Ready
Have your marker ready! If you’re waiting on a huge star, chances are they will grab the first marker they see and use it to sign everyone’s items. Make sure you have a bold marker that works.
5. Have Fun
There’s no guarantee that you will meet the athlete, musician, star/celeb. Make friends with the people who are sharing the experience with you. Networking is essential as a collector. Share information, share stories, share a good time. Sometimes the autograph is secondary to the actual experience itself.
Have a story you want to share? Contact me via Twitter @autographblog and I will post your story on the blog!

2015 - Top 5 Through The Mail Autograph Signers in Hockey

5. Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane is tearing up the NHL. He recently broke Bobby Hull’s Chicago Blackhawks franchise record when he reached 22 consecutive games with a point. As of right now, Kane has a 23 game point streak going. Kane has also been sending back signed photos, cards, and pucks to fans who took the time to write him. He is signing autographs c/o his parent’s home in Buffalo. If you would like the address, you can find it by signing up for a membership at this LINK.

The “Big E” has been signing a lot since his retirement from the NHL in 2007. Eric signed for fans who sent him requests in 2015. You can contact Eric via his parents address which can be found at StarTiger or by CLICKING HERE.

There hasn’t been a more electrifying “undersized” hockey player in Calgary since Theo Fleury. Johnny Hockey became the first Calgary Flames players to reach 50 points as a rookie since Jarome Iginla did it back in the 96-97 season. You can contact Johnny by writing him c/o Calgary Flames Hockey Club. The address can be found HERE.

The former 1stOverall draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers has been signing autographs through the mail like a mad man lately. I strongly recommend sending to him now before he gets flooded with requests in 2016. You can contact him via the Edmonton Oilers. The address can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Ok, maybe I’m biased because I am a hardcore Toews fan! Have you tried to get his autograph in-person? He’s Captain Serious on and off of the ice. Getting Toews to sign in-person is not the easiest task. In 2015, Toews was great signing TTM requests. If you would like to try him, you can send him a request c/o ChicagoBlackhawks. I strongly recommend joining StarTiger to see what other collectors have to say about his signing habits through the mail and in-person.

Top 5 Movie & Television TTM Autograph Signers of 2015

2015 was a great year for through the mail autograph collecting! Though I have been going through a long drought over the past few weeks of no returns, I have had some amazing autograph returns from some amazing actors and actresses in the movie and television world this past year! Here is my Top 5 Movie & Television TTM Autograph Signers of 2015

Ian McKellen is best known for his roles as Galdalf in The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. You may also recognize him as Magneto in the X-Men movies. Ian has been a gracious signer for many years, 2015 was no different. Ian signs regularly through his agency in London. You can find Ian McKellen contact information by becoming a member of StarTiger or by Clicking HERE.

Andrew Lincoln is best known for his role as Rick Grimes in what many of us would view as the best television show of all-time, The Walking Dead. Many TWD fans may be unaware of this, but Andrew Lincoln is great with signing autographs for fans who take the time to write him. This year Andrew was kind enough to sign a few photos which I sent to him c/o of New York agency. He has a new working address. You can find it at StarTiger or by Clicking HERE.

You can’t name many A-List actors or actresses that signed as much as Amanda Seyfried this past year. Amanda continues to sign c/o her address in PA. You can find it at StarTiger or by Clicking HERE.

Melissa signed tons of fan mail for anyone who may have sent her an autograph request c/o Mike &Molly.  Melissa has been busy as of late filming the Ghostbusters revamp. If you don’t have Melissa’s contact info, you can find it at StarTiger or by Clicking HERE.

Game of Thrones fans will be thrilled to know that if you want Tyrion Lannister’s autograph, you can send him a request c/o his agency in New York. Peter has been a great signer for many years. It will be interesting to see what 2016 holds for Peter as a signer and as an actor. Coming off a great year where he won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2015, will he have as much time to sign in 2016? You can find Peter Dinklage contact information at StarTiger or by Clicking HERE.

Collecting Hockey Cards & Baseball Cards in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Along with collecting autographs, I am a long time collector of sports cards. I have been a collector of sports cards long before I ever received my first autograph through the mail. I mainly collect hockey cards pre-1972. If you are looking to trade or sell your collection, please get in contact with me. I am also looking for baseball cards, football cards, and basketball cards pre-1972 as well.

I started collecting hockey cards around 1985. I have amassed quite the collection over the past 30 years. I'm always looking for deals in my hometown of Winnipeg. I have found that the best places to buy cards locally are Mulvey Flea Market, Cancentral Card & Supply, and First Row Collectibles. There are about 10 different places throughout my city, but those are my preferences.

I buy a lot of vintage hockey cards from Mulvey. I buy all my boxes and supplies from Cancentral. And I buy singles, autographs, and Winnipeg Jets autographs and cards from First Row Collectibles( I highly recommend to check these out.
